How to Make Your Home Organized During COVID-19 Self-Isolation
For many of us, working from home or simply being confined at home due to coronavirus is a new and daunting experience. While you may not feel in control of the virus itself, there are certain things you can do to take control of your home space. Even doing a few simple things to organize your home can make your life more comfortable and be really positive for your mindset. Below are several tips to keep organized including some home office tips.
Select a Few Areas to Declutter – Whether or not you’re working virtually from home, decluttering is a wonderful first step. However, you should never feel the need to tackle your entire home all at once. Instead, make a list of a few priority areas you’d like to work on, and then take on a little each day. You may want to clean up a potential spot for a pop-up home office (like a dining room table or extra bedroom), a closet, a pantry, or maybe a section of your basement. Each time you finish an area, you will feel like you’ve accomplished something.
Beyond being productive, decluttering can actually be enjoyable, looking through old pictures, gifts, clothing, and other belongings you forgot you had. Separate out items you would like to donate, and stack them neatly on a porch or in a garage until charity shops reopen. Immediately toss anything else you no longer want or need.
Organize Your Virtual Home Office – Some people already have office space in their homes while others need to determine the best location to create that space. Let’s first talk briefly about those who already have a home office space. Although you’ve got a designated room, it’s still a good time to take a look at what’s stored in your desk, drawers, and bookshelves so you can maximize the space for things you may be bringing home from work. Pull the contents out and do some organization. Clear out space on a bookshelf to allow for a temporary filing area.
For those without a designated office space, you may need to get a bit creative. The dining table, for instance, is an obvious place to set up a laptop and files, and it won’t require you to purchase a desk or other furniture. Assuming you plan to use the table for family meals, however, you’ll want to create a set up such that you can easily and quickly move your work items to a designated box or bookshelf each evening. Alternatively, consider converting a spare bedroom or hobby room into your virtual office. A designated room brings with it the major benefit of being able to shut the door to eliminate noise and other distractions. In any case, it may be useful to pick up some simple A4 office boxes to keep work files tidy.
Maintain a Routine – When self-isolating, it is a good idea to establish and maintain routines throughout the day. Begin your day by getting dressed and cleaning up as if you were going into an office or going out to meet friends. Throughout the day, keep your home space neat and clean. At the end of the day, make sure to tidy up your work area, clean the family dishes, and clean up all the little things so that you can go into the next day with a fresh start and a healthy mind. Make it fun! Put on some fun music or favorite YouTube videos while you clean so it doesn’t feel like a chore.
